Our Kuleana
Conservation is our nature and nature is our kuleana. Working with our partners—from communities to government agencies to businesses and donors—we mālama 14 preserves and help protect other sites across the Hawaiian Islands and at Palmyra Atoll.
Across the Islands
Hahai nō ka ua i ka ululāʻau | The rain follows the forest
We work to protect Hawai‘i’s remaining native forests—the source of our fresh water and the habitat for our native endangered forest birds. Invasive species, drought, and wildfire threaten mauka areas, while the impacts of climate change, limited conservation management capacity, and increasing visitors add to these pressures. In collaboration with partners across Hawaiʻi, we deploy natural climate and indigenous solutions to resist extinction, connect mauka to makai, advance climate solutions, and build nature’s resilience.

Along the Coasts
ʻAʻohe hana nui ke alu ʻia | No task is too big when done together by all
The living reefs along Hawaiʻi’s shores provide important habitat for reef fish; protect us from storms and rising sea levels; and support Hawaiʻi’s cultural traditions, island lifestyle and economy. We develop tools, advance science, foster local leadership, and restore essential habitat with community groups, government agencies and other organizations to enhance the health, management, resilience and sustainability of coral reefs and reef fish.
At Palmyra Atoll
One of Earthʻs Great Hope Spots
Our preserve at Palmyra Atoll serves as living laboratory for conservation and a refuge for species on the verge of extinction. Here, scientists from around the world are working to better understand the effectiveness of large, protected areas and the ecological connections between land and sea and to unlock the clues to climate resilience. Their discoveries can help to improve blue water marine protected area (MPA) management and build the resilience of islands and atolls worldwide.
