June 06, 2008: The Nature Conservancy Reacts to End of Debate on Climate Security Act
Today’s vote brings us tangibly closer to a bill that can achieve 60 votes on the Senate floor and be enacted into law. We understand that this is a complex matter. We encourage Senators to continue work to refine important provisions in this bill. The Nature Conservancy stands ready to provide scientific and policy information gathered from our experience in the field that will advance the debate and improve the next iteration of this legislation.

May 27, 2008: Lieberman-Warner: Amendment Highlights Critical Funding
The manager's amendment reflects a significant step toward leadership by the U.S. in recognizing the important role of tropical forests in reducing carbon in the atmosphere. Deforestation and other land-use activities contribute roughly 20 percent of global carbon emissions, more than all the planes, trains and automobiles around the world. For many developing countries deforestation is the leading source of carbon dioxide emissions, accounting in some cases for 70% or more.

March 10, 2008: Nature Conservancy Launches Innovative Voluntary Carbon Offsets Program
Today, The Nature Conservancy announced a new, state-of-the-art carbon offsets program that allows people to voluntarily mitigate their carbon footprint. The program meets the highest, most rigorous standards of any carbon offset program to date, and it may also serve as a pilot in some respects for future programs that could be enacted under federal law.

December 17, 2007: Nature Conservancy Applauds Adoption of Bali Roadmap
The Bali Roadmap does not go far enough to address the scientific community’s warnings and avert the most dangerous consequences of climate change for people and for the planet. But it does open the door to a tougher agreement in two years. There is enough flexibility here for future negotiations to craft a meaningful, comprehensive agreement by 2009.
