Australia Program - How We Work

The private conservation movement in Australia is still relatively young and there are just a few organizations with the capacity to develop and implement large-scale, on-the ground conservation programs. Because of the many cultural and geographic similarities between the U.S. and Australia, the Conservancy’s U.S. conservation experience is more relevant in Australia than perhaps any other country in the world. For this reason, the Conservancy is exchanging skills and expertise with Australian conservation organizations in the hopes of making a significant difference in a country that still has so much natural heritage to preserve.

Since 1999, the Conservancy has partnered with a number of Australian non-governmental organizations to strengthen the nation's growing private sector conservation efforts. Based out of Melbourne, Australia our focus is threefold:

  • To build the institutional and technical capacity of partner conservation organizations (through the Australia Fellowships Program);
  • To serve as a catalyst for conservation (including the Australia Land Acquisition and Management Fund);
  • To support the creation of an enabling environment for conservation and philanthropy for leverage at scale (through the Australia Fellowships Program).
