Ecosystem-based Management

Ecosytem-based Management is an adaptive approach that seeks to incorporate ecological, socioeconomic and cultural needs into the creation of long-term, sustainable land use implementation plans.

Known as EBM, Ecosystem-based management is also an important part of the conservation solution in Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest.

The Boreal Conservation Framework

The Boreal Conservation Framework, created by the Canadian Boreal Forest Initiative, sets out a national goal to protect at least 50 percent of the entire Canadian boreal forest in a network of large, connected and protected natural areas. The framework also supports sustainable communities, ecosystem-based management practices on industrial lands and science-based stewardship activities across the entire forest.

The Conservancy is joining with this exciting coalition of leaders who understand the global importance of the Canadian boreal forest and are taking steps to ensure its sustainability for generations. Partners in the coalition include:

Canadian Boreal Initiative

The Canadian Boreal Initiative (CBI) is working with a wide range of organizations and individuals to link science, policy and conservation activities in Canada's Boreal region.  In 2003, CBI convened the Boreal Leadership Council, an extraordinary group of conservation organizations, First Nations and resource companies.

Ethical Funds Company

Launched in 1992, The Ethical Funds Company is Canada’s original and largest manager of socially responsible mutual funds. In addition to evaluating all investments according to their financial, social and environmental performance and outlook, The Ethical Funds Company promotes corporate accountability – making good companies better – and gives investors a voice in encouraging sustainable business practices.

Kaska Nation

The Kaska Nation is developing eco-system-based land use plans based on traditional knowledge and conservation biology that include large-scale protected areas and provide for a sustainable economy for the Kaska people. The Kaska are partnering with CBI on key initiatives including: the compilation and organization of Kaska traditional knowledge (including the establishment of appropriate methodologies and policies to ensure protection of Kaska intellectual property rights); and the integration of this knowledge into land and resource management decision-making processes.
