Hikes with The New Canaan Nature Center
Don’t forget that the New Canaan Nature Center regularly schedules hikes in Devil’s Den. These range from the educational to the purely recreational, and are always free and open to the public. For an updated schedule, visit their site at www.newcanaannature.org/den

Saturday, September 13: International Coastal Cleanup
9am-noon
Saugatuck River Estuary
Longshore and the Westport Boat Ramp

The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup is the world’s largest volunteer event of its kind. Last year, 378,000 volunteers from 76 countries and 45 states cleared six million pounds of trash from oceans and waterways and recorded every piece of trash collected. Since 2006 The Nature Conservancy’s Saugatuck River Watershed Partnership has captained efforts in parts of lower Fairfield county to aid in this monumental effort.

Saturday, September 20: Trail Adopter Training Walk
10am-noon
Devil’s Den Preserve (meet in parking lot)

Learn about our Trail Adoption program, including what’s expected and how best to monitor and maintain your assigned section of trail. With Den hike leader Bill Levin.

October 4: Housatonic Valley Bike Ride
9am
The Nature Conservancy Berkshire Taconic Landscape invites you to join a bicycle ride across state borders and through the Housatonic Valley. Bike ride begins in Canaan, CT and will head up to Ashley Falls, MA. Click for more information.

Saturday, October 25: Macroinvertebrate Sampling
9am-1pm
The Saugatuck River Watershed Partnership invites you to learn about local water quality by sampling what’s living in our streams using the CT DEP’s Rapid Bio-assessment in Wadeable Streams and Rivers. A morning training session on macroinvertebrate identification with Michael Beauchene of the CT DEP, Water Resources Bureau will be followed by River Sampling at selected sites in the Saugatuck River Watershed.
