2008 Annual Meeting
Presenter Bios
Kristen Blann
Freshwater Ecologist
The Nature Conservancy
Kristen Blann joined the Conservancy science staff as a freshwater ecologist in January 2006 and joined the Iowa staff a year later. She earned a Ph.D. in conservation biology from the University of Minnesota, where she studied landscape-scale influences on coldwater stream fish communities in the Blufflands of the Upper Mississippi River. She has provided technical leadership for aquatic Conservation Action Plans in the Boone River and the karst streams of northeast Iowa's upper Mississippi River watersheds, as well as the Brainerd Lakes and Lake Alexander aquatic priorities in Minnesota. She recently completed a statewide conservation portfolio, including a report Identifying Lake Conservation Priorities for the Conservancy in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota: Volume I. Prior to her work at the Conservancy, Dr. Blann held a postdoctoral position with the University of Minnesota Water Resources Center exploring the impact of agricultural tile drainage on aquatic ecosystems.
Kevin Roe
Professor, Department of Natural Resource, Ecology & Management
Iowa State University
Kevin Roe is a professor at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, in the Department of Natural Resource, Ecology and Management. His research interests include the conservation genetics, systematics and evolution of freshwater organisms. To date this research has included fishes (Cichlids, Centrarchids and Lampreys), molluscs (Unionids) and crustaceans (freshwater shrimps). In particular, he is most interested in the relationships between unionid mussels and their host fishes and future projects include investigating patterns of coevolution using molecular tools. His projects include evaluating the role historical processes play in the distribution of species and investigating the biogeography of freshwater organisms in North America. Dr. Roe earned his Ph.D. in biology from The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.
