The U.S. House of Representatives has advanced legislation supported by The Nature Conservancy that will block one of the top pathways through which invasive species are introduced to our nation’s lakes, rivers and seas. If signed into law, the Ballast Water Treatment Act will go a long way toward halting further invasions which have already cost our economy billions in control efforts.

April 01, 2008: The Nature Conservancy Receives $1.8 Million Gift to Help Protect Common Loon
The Nature Conservancy announced today that it has received $1.8 million to help conserve the common loon, the official state bird of Minnesota. The gift from the late Iva Weir is one of the largest donations benefiting a single species the Conservancy has ever received in Minnesota.

October 03, 2007: Public Access Ensured to 51,163 Acres in Minnesota’s Northwoods
Governor Pawlenty announced today that more than 51,000 acres of forest—almost 80 square miles—in Itasca and Koochiching counties have been conserved. This is the single largest conservation project in Minnesota in at least a decade. The agreement will protect jobs, preserve wildlife habitat and guarantee public access for outdoor recreation.

December 22, 2005: Partners Protect 1,800-acre City Forest
The largest contiguous tract of ecologically significant City-owned land has been permanently protected, ensuring wildlife habitat and public access, partners in the project announced today. The 1,800-acre property, know as the Magney-Snively Natural Area, is the first tract to nominated and enrolled in Duluth Natural Area Program, a first-of-its kind-program for the City designed to protect the natural heritage within the City of Duluth.

Less than 1 percent remains of the tallgrass prairie that covered most of the western and southern parts of Minnesota before European settlement. May 25, 2005: Canadian, U.S Partners Protect Parcel Along Wild and Historic Lake Superior Tributary
Some 750 acres (304 hectares) along the Pigeon River, a key undeveloped tributary of Lake Superior, will be added to Ontario’s protected areas system, establishing a corridor from the Pigeon River Provincial Park west to La Verendrye Provincial Park. The effort safeguards the last seven unprotected miles (11 kilometers) of shoreline along the 90-mile Pigeon River (145 kilometers).
