Acres protected.

The Nature Conservancy has worked with Montana landowners and communities since 1979 to conserve almost 500,000 acres of important ranchland and wildlife habitat.

The Conservancy focuses its work on six broad landscapes. Staff are based within communities in or near these landscapes:

Southwestern Montana, including the Centennial, Upper Madison Valley and Big Hole Valley, program based in Bozeman

Eastern Montana/Northern Prairies, program based at the Matador Ranch in southern Phillips County

Southeastern Montana/Yellowstone River, program based in Billings.

North Central Montana/Rocky Mountain Front, program based in Choteau

Western Montana/Blackfoot River Valley, program based in Missoula

Greater Yellowstone, a Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho program

The Conservancy also acts as a steward of several nature preserves around Montana.

Pine Butte Swamp Preserve, Choteau
The Nature Conservancy continues an ambitious project to protect Montana's Pine Butte Swamp: the largest wetland complex along the Rocky Mountain Front and the grizzly bear's last stronghold on the plains.

Comertown Pothole Prairie Preserve
In the far northeastern corner of Montana, there is a rolling landscape of native grasses and shallow “pothole” lakes that was formed over 10,000 years ago by the great continental glaciers.

Dancing Prairie Preserve - Eureka, Montana
The Dancing Prairie Preserve, located in northwestern Montana, is home to one of the last remaining populations of the endangered herb, Spalding's catchfly.

Safe Harbor Marsh Preserve - Flathead Basin, Montana
Once known as the Bird-Pinkney Marsh, Safe Harbor Marsh Preserve is an excellent example of a low elevation freshwater marsh within the diverse wetland region of the Flathead Basin.

Swan River Oxbow Preserve, Swan Valley, Montana
Between the Swan Range to the east, and the Mission Mountains to the west, the Swan River flows through a beautiful valley. In 1986 The Nature Conservancy purchased 392 acres of this valley, creating the Swan River Oxbow Preserve.

Lindbergh Lake Pines, Swan Valley, Montana
Lindbergh Lake Pines is a 40-acre preserve of venerable old-growh ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir and western larch.

South Fork Madison Preserve
Located about five miles west of West Yellowstone, the South Fork Madison Preserve is an important wetland habitat which supports outstanding populations of fish, waterfowl and fur bearers.
