Prescribed Fire Altered fire regimes—too much, too little, or the wrong kind of fire—directly affect our mission to protect the diversity of life on Earth. The life cycle of many of the preserves' plants are tied to fire, which causes pine cones to burst and release seeds, clears the undergrowth and allows plenty of sunlight to reach the ground. With the use of prescribed fire, many plants and animals will thrive at places such as Boiling Spring Lakes and Green Swamp preserves.
