Through the teamwork of the S.C. Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, Congaree Land Trust, Calhoun County Conservation District and Friends of the Congaree Swamp, Calhoun County now has its first Heritage preserve. The four organizations moved quickly to secure the 201-acre tract along the Congaree River until the Heritage Trust Program of S.C. Department of Natural Resources purchased it, creating the Congaree Bluffs Heritage Preserve. The preserve is located directly across the river from Congaree Swamp National Monument, ensuring additional protection for the monument.
