Hurricane Ike Updates
OUR COASTAL PRESERVES AND PROJECTS
The Nature Conservancy operates several preserves and projects along the path of Hurricane Ike, which made landfall on Saturday, September 13.
UPDATE: September 19, 2008 - 1:00 p.m.
After surveying our coastal properties for a week, it appears that Conservancy fared very well. One of our biggest concerns was the Texas City Prairie Preserve, a 2,200 acre area possessing grasslands and marshes and one of the last remaining sites that supports wild Attwater's prairie chickens. Our survey this week indicates that 20 out of 23 these endangered birds on the preserve survived, which is a remarkable survival rate considering Ike's fury. Work is underway to repair minor damage to buildings on this and other properties and we are working to restore full operations.
We have had some tree fall damage at our Wier Woods Preserve as well as Sandylands and Little Rocky. However, the amount of damage is much less than what was experienced with Hurricane Rita.
We are awaiting assessment information regarding the Pierce Marsh Preserve and Elm Grove (on Bolivar Peninsula), both in Galveston County.
