United for Alabama's Lands and Waters
For more than 60 years, you have helped The Nature Conservancy protect nature through conservation policy. We all share a deep connection to Alabama's breathtaking landscapes, from the rolling hills of the Appalachian foothills to the pristine shores of the Gulf Coast. With your support, let's continue to build on that legacy.
We advance policy solutions that strengthen the connection between nature and people.
Explore Our Legislative Priorities
-
- Grow Alabama legislative awareness and support for the project.
- Secure Congressional authorization of the project in Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) and initiation of planning, design and implementation.
- Secure support of federal, state and local government agencies and private partners for the project.
-
- Support Forever Wild Land Trust and grow resources that can fund additional conservation land acquisition and stewardship.
- Secure federal appropriations funding for priority projects in Alabama with partners, including Forest Legacy Program funds for the Dugdown Corridor (Alabama Forestry Commission & Forever Wild) and Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) funding for the National Forests in Alabama (US Forest Service).
-
- With the recent changes to Waters of the United States via Sackett v. EPA, there is much uncertainty for how this unfolds under state authority.
- TNC will support policies that allow for continued protection of our state’s water resources, as they are essential for all aspects of life, without unreasonable limitations that negatively impact economic sustainability.
-
- Secure support for TNC proposed coastal restoration projects and associated grant submissions.
- Support the establishment of estuary programs that benefit the Perdido River Watershed.
-
Support policies that incentivize the use of renewable energy technologies and economic opportunities in Alabama communities while using science as a guide for site selection.

Decades of Hands-on Expertise Working with Communities & Government at All Levels
Since 1951, we have shared policy recommendations and fostered a world where both people and nature thrive. As a non-partisan, evidence-based organization, we strive to advance policy solutions that support land and water conservation.

Alabama's Living Landscape
Alabama is home to more than 4,500 species of plants and animals, making it one of the most biodiverse states in the country. It is also experiencing decreased soil moisture, shoreline erosion and diminished agricultural productivity.

How TNC Uses Land Acquisitions & Conservation Easements to Conserve Alabama
These powerful and effective tools allow us to protect open space lands from intensive development. TNC uses land acquisition to purchase land to preserve it for conservation, agriculture and outdoor recreation. Conservation easements offer a unique solution, allowing landowners to protect their land while continuing to live on and use their land, at the same time potentially providing them with tax benefits.
-
Alabama residents cherish nature and are committed to safeguarding it. Land conservation helps improve water quality and supply, boosts resiliency against storms and provides habitat for diverse species. Protecting land also has economic benefits such as support for agricultural productivity and creating more opportunities for people to get outdoors and connect with nature. Investing in land conservation today ensures a healthier, more resilient environment and quality of life for all who call our state home.

Our mission is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends.
We see an exciting future for nature. A future filled with opportunities and possibilities. A future where nature beats the odds. Where a better tomorrow exists thanks to forests, grasslands and streams. Coral reefs and mountain ranges. Animals great and small. Our human communities. By collaborating across boundaries, borders and divides, we can manifest this reality because together, we find a way.
Conservation policy balances human needs and the preservation of our natural world.
