Together, We Can Preserve North Carolina's Natural Treasures

For more than 60 years, you have helped The Nature Conservancy protect nature through conservation policy. We all share a deep connection to North Carolina's breathtaking landscapes, from the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains to the picturesque Outer Banks. With your support, let's continue to build on that legacy.

We partner with policy leaders to strengthen the connection between nature and people and to advance nature-based solutions.

Explore Our Legislative Priorities

    • Increase recurring funding for the three state conservation programs (NCLWF, PARTF, and Farmland Preservation) from $61M recurring to $67 recurring.

    • Amend the conservation tax credit to increase the cap from $5M to $8M and extend the sunset by two years.

    • Amend NC present-use value statutes to reduce costs for land protection by NGOs by an estimated $300,000 per year.

    • Work with NC legislative leaders to ensure smooth pass-through of federal EPA CPR Grant ($421M) to the state with $200M to TNC in a subaward.

    • Work with NC Governor’s Administration to finalize contract agreement on CPR Grant and get administration of grant started (NC Dept of Natural and Cultural Resources is lead state entity on the entire grant).

    • $10M for nature-based flood risk reduction projects in western NC.

    • Increase legislative support for and provide subject matter expertise to NC DEQ on statewide flood blueprint decision-making tool.

Policy, People + Nature Share a Vital Connection

Land connects us. It is the foundation of our existence, providing us with food, energy, and space where we build our cities and communities. Our culture and way of life are deeply connected to the natural world, reminding us that we depend on healthy lands, waters, and ecosystems. Our land flows with natural springs and rivers that produce water, supports vital wildlife corridors for endangered species, and ecosystems for marine life. It protects vulnerable coastlines and adds beauty to developed areas. Recognizing this fundamental connection, we must conserve our land in order to safeguard all we cherish for generations.

How TNC Uses Land Acquisitions & Conservation Easements to Conserve North Carolina

These powerful and effective tools allow us to protect open space lands from intensive development. TNC uses land acquisition to purchase land to preserve it for conservation, agriculture, and outdoor recreation. Conservation easements offer a unique solution, allowing landowners to protect their land while continuing to live on and use their land, at the same time potentially providing them with tax benefits.

  • Advocate for land conservation and help improve water quality and supply, boost resiliency against storms, and conserve diverse habitats and species. It also has economic benefits such as support for agricultural productivity and creating more opportunities for people to get outdoors and connect with nature. Investing in land conservation today ensures a healthier, more resilient environment and quality of life for all who call our state home.

  • Our mission of conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends.

We see an exciting future for nature. A future filled with opportunities and possibilities. A future where nature beats the odds. Where a better tomorrow exists thanks to forests, grasslands and streams. Coral reefs and mountain ranges. Animals great and small. Our human communities. By collaborating across boundaries, borders and divides, we can manifest this a reality because together, we find a way.
