Biography

John Torgan is the State Director of The Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island. John is a native Rhode Islander and has spent most of his career working to clean up and protect the coastal waters. Prior to coming to The Nature Conservancy, John worked for 18 years for Save The Bay where he served as Narragansett Baykeeper and Director of Advocacy. He joined the Conservancy as Director of Ocean and Coastal Conservation in 2011, where he worked to advance coastal water quality, habitat restoration, and led the organization’s coastal conservation programs and projects in Rhode Island and regional work across southern New England. John was named State Director in early 2017.

As State Director, John leads a dynamic staff of 27 people in Rhode Island working to advance conservation in and from Rhode Island for all of nature.
