Over the years, The Nature Conservancy and the East Haddam Land Trust have protected more than 500 acres around Chapman Pond. Bordered on the west by low floodplain forest, and to the east by hemlock forest. the pond and surrounding lands provide nesting, breeding and feeding habitat for a variety of plants and animals. It is also a winter roosting site for bald eagles.

This tidal freshwater pond can be visited only by small boat.

Depending on the season, visitors might catch a glimpse of bald eagles, which roost at the preserve during winter. Other animals known to reside there include belted kingfisher, black-crowned night heron, black duck, great blue heron, great egret, great horned owl, red-tailed hawk and snowy egret as well as coyote, red fox and river otter. Four rare plant species are found adjacent marsh habitat.
