Pine Creek Barrens contains critical habitat for several rare plant species.

Prescribed fire is a restorative management strategy for many landscapes, including Pine Creek Barrens Nature Preserve. During fire season, generally February-April and October-November, sections of preserves including trails may be temporarily closed for fire.
