Conserving Louisiana’s water—from freshwater rivers and streams to the deep blue sea—requires a whole systems approach. This includes working inland to restore and manage healthy forests that store and filter water and atmospheric carbon, and to reconnect floodplains and functioning wetlands that support wildlife and prevent flooding. Along the Gulf Coast, TNC is fortifying estuarine habitats like oyster reefs that filter water, buffer the shoreline against wind and waves, and support local livelihoods. Our comprehensive, large-scale approach makes Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico region a more resilient and productive place for people to live, work and play.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Learn about rare native plant and animal species as you walk beneath the canopy of towering longleaf pines at TNC’s Abita Creek Flatwoods Preserve.
• Join TNC scientists on a guided tour of the Cypress Island Preserve to catch glimpses of turtles, alligators, roseate spoonbills and a variety of migrating birds.
• Board a skiff to explore among cypress and tupelo trees draped with Spanish moss as you keep an eye out for migratory birds.
