The Biden Administration today released a new carbon emissions target for the United States: 61 to 66% below 2005 levels by 2035. The target is part of the country’s updated nationally determined contribution as part of the Paris Agreement.
In response to this news, The Nature Conservancy Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Morris issued the following statement.
“Tackling climate change is an all-hands-on-deck effort, and all actors need a clear and decisive vision to aim for. By releasing this updated climate commitment, the U.S. is creating a shared target. This sends a signal that governments at all levels across the U.S. can move forward with and set policies to meet this goal, businesses can make smart investments into clean energy and natural climate solutions, and people across all walks of life can see how their actions fit into the greater whole as we work together to transition the U.S. and the planet towards a net-zero future.
“As the world’s largest historical greenhouse gas emitter, it is critical for the U.S. to signal its ambition to other countries in a year when they are all being called up to renew their 5-year climate pledges. We hope the message sent today from the Biden Administration will be enough to keep the world focused on enhancing the global climate ambition as we head toward COP30 next year in Brazil.
“No matter how political winds blow and parties change, The Nature Conservancy will work with policymakers, industry partners, peer organizations and our members to protect nature and people. This includes our efforts to support the Paris Agreement and the goal of achieving a net-zero future.”
