The following is a statement by Jennifer Morris, CEO of The Nature Conservancy, after the U.S. House of Representatives approved a $1.75 trillion Build Back Better Act and the Senate-passed a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package that, together, constitute the United States’ largest investment in climate action and nature:

“Not a moment too soon, this progress on the infrastructure and Build Back Better bills will help us achieve the emissions cuts and nature gains we need to ensure a cleaner, healthier, safer future. In addition to the critical funding and policy changes these bills provide, this progress gives us momentum and hope to meet the scale of the twin climate and nature crises.

“These bills would bring unprecedented investments in clean energy, transportation, grid modernization, climate-smart forestry and agriculture initiatives, energy efficiency and a civilian climate corps. All are substantial and much-needed advances that also bring additional benefits for the economy and our way of life. They’ll also help communities adapt and prepare for the realities of climate change today by building community resilience and advancing nature-based solutions to help us be more prepared for extreme weather. These are all vital investments for supporting a strong economy, a healthy population and a sustainable, resilient natural world.

“As leaders from around the globe meet in Glasgow to forge a coordinated response to climate change, these bills are a promise to the world that the United States will live up to its commitments and lead the way on providing solutions. Together with recent international commitments to reduce emissions and deforestation, this week’s significant positive movements to address climate change can make a tremendous difference and energize us for continued progress.

“We look forward to seeing both bills signed into law soon and appreciate the leadership of congressional leaders who have helped ensure they include strong climate provisions.”
